Whats Best On Page SEO Or Off Page SEO? Where Should Your Focus Be?

Egypt, written using logos

Image by Interact Egypt - Play Innovation via Flickr

Here is an article from SEO from Dr. Pete discussing the relative merits of On Page or Off Page SEO, and where your focus should be.

What's interesting is to me that while he does point out that his definition of “on page seo” includes content, in the various cases outlined (authority sites, link building, etc) there is not really an example that covers an almost 100% focus on traffic.

My Case #5 (to go with the 4 Dr. Pete has mentioned) would be

The winner in 2012.

95-99% focus on great content
Blog curation
Virtually ignoring link building.
Only doing Basic on-page SEO (no perfect SEO)
Some internal linking as required.
Linking out to news source as per standard blog curation best practices.

To me that is where people should be focusing on right now, writing great content and letting the links take care of themselves.  Sure some linking is a good idea.  But have a read below and let me know what you think.

Every week, without fail, I hear someone ask where they should put their SEO budget – in on-page tactics or in link-building. Unfortunately, there are plenty of SEO companies and consultants lining up to give them the answer – and that answer just happens (“coincidentally”) to be whatever the company/consultant is good at. When you’re an expert with a hammer, you start to think you can nail anyone (wait, that’s not right).

Here’s the honest answer that no one wants to hear: “It depends”. No one wants to hear it because they’re back where they started – having no idea what to do next. Instead of leaving you stranded or trying to sell you a hammer for your box of screws, I’m going to walk you through 4 cases and explain how I’d allocate your budgets for each one.

Your Site Speed Is Vital. Here Is How You Can Check Your Page Loading Times

Average page load time as a new ranking factor for Google Search - analysis by Google Site performance in webmaster tools

Image by Matthieu Dejardins, eCommerce Activist via Flickr

In todays internet marketing world, google is placing increased emphasis on your sites speed (that is, how fast it takes to load a page).

So it's vital that you know and keep up to date on just how fast your website is loading so that you can avoid any Google penalties.

Google Webmaster tools has a function that shows you your sites page loading speeds which is obviously another good reason why you should be using Google webmaster tools.  Make sure you sign up for Google analytics at the same time.

Previously there was only one Site Speed report, this has been renamed to “Page Timings”. On the Page Timings report, you can view your site's load times in three ways: use the Explorer tab to explore average load time across dimensions, use the Performance tab to see how the load times break down by speed ranges, or use the Map Overlay tab to see how the load times breakdown by geography.

Pageone Curator – How NOT to Do Blog Curation

Blog curation is hot right now.  But the thing is, you are not going to have much success with it unless you do it properly!

Following on from yesterdays pageone curator video we did about blog curation, here is a second video showing what NOT to do.

Watch as Tim demonstrates how an un-ethical person has ripped off some of our content and placed it on his blog.  Not only is this blatant plagurism but the person doing it will get next to no good results doing it!

Crazy, but thats what some people do.  Watch the video and learn from this!

Watch our how NOT to do blog curation video and see for yourself.  It's only a short one but there is a lot to learn in there.

Enjoy

Author Rank, rel=”author” and Google Authorship Program – What Are They?

I’ve put together an article discussing just what the Google authorship program (also know as rel=”author” and author rank) does and how it will benefit your website.

In a nutshell if you want more web traffic and protection from people copying your content and claiming it as your own, then this is something you need to take a look at.

Check our my first article on what google author rank is, and how you can benefit. Shortly I’ll be releasing a second article which actually goes into detail of how to set it up and configure it for your site.

I also discuss Publisher rank (aka rel=”publisher”) and how this differs from author rank and how you can use both to your advantage.

So take a read and if you have any comments, please leave them here or on the article and I’ll respond.
