Brief bios of the Marketing Assassins.

Tim Buchalka was a software programmer in his “pre ninja days” for over 20 years. These days he works with his “fellow Ninja” brother Anthony in their online businesses.

Being a real life geek, Tim loves all the technical stuff about the internet and in particular gets a buzz working with various SEO and Web 2.0 projects and still loves designing and building software.

Tim has quite a sense of humor and never seems to get stressed about anything in life (other than Anthony playing guitar when he is supposed to be working).

That’s actually not totally true as Anthony recently purchased his first Mac  computer and loves what he can now do it!

And in addition what about if I mentioned that you could retrieve all this info using nothing but your favorite browser and a standard Google search?

Interested? Read on….

Firstly lets take a step back and discuss relevance, as this term a very important part of Googles results returned from your searches.

Google wants to provide the searcher with extremely accurate and relevant results that it can. Google are aware that if they fail to provide this info, it’s likely that searchers will stop using their services completely, and no users means no advertising revenues which is their main source of income!

For a prime example of a search engine dropping the ball, spare a thought for AltaVista? In its time it was the most popular search engine, and almost overnight (not quite) lost the crown to Google because they dropped the ball with relevance.

I don’t think there is such a thing as search engine loyalty (at least not for the average search engine user). If a better alternative arrives, the everyday user will just start using that service.

Trust me when I say Google are very conscious of this, and put a heap of resources into making sure that when you search for something, the results that come back are highly related to your the search term you used.

They have to keep the everyday searcher happy so that they come back to Google again and again.

Shred Internet Marketers have, of course found ways to “game” Google in previous years, so that their own sites show up instead of what should be the most relevant results, and such techniques are still used in modern times.

Mostly these techniques are located by Google who is getting smarter at finding these types of hacks.

Google seems to get it right a lot of the time, and certainly more than the other major search engines at this point in time.

Ok so given that Google is now returning the most relevant results and has the biggest user base when compared to any other search engine, and that its clear that their primary goal is info relevance to their users, does it not make sense to use Googles search results and be using this information more when conducting keyword research?

For example lets say your searching for the keyword phrase web traffic

When I entered that search term into google, I got a list of current pages that Google tell us are the most relevance to that search term (along with a host of ads).

But in additional to this information at the bottom of the page they also provide (and here is the key)….

Searches RELATED to: web traffic (Their words).

Hmm interesting a list of keywords that Google think are relevant to my search.

Google actually show you the keywords that they deem to be the most relevant to your search phrase.

If you do some research about this, there is lots of speculation on how google decide on what words are displayed, but no matter what you think I believe it’s certainly worth looking at, isn’t it?

In my testing I found the keywords it came back with seemed to be terms heavily searched on.

In the case of web traffic, the search terms I got back were

increase web traffic
free web traffic
buy web traffic
google web traffic
web traffic report
web traffic generator
web traffic monitoring
measure web traffic

They all seem pretty related to my original search.

And you can drill down by clicking on a phrase to get relevant keywords to that keyword. For example I could have clicked increase web traffic and obtained a list of related keywords that relate to that term.

This is getting interesting. Before you pass on this method compared to using your favorite keyword research program, It’s my suggestion consider the following.

1) The information from these searches are directly from Googles Server, so the data has not been corrupted in any way.

Many keyword research tools do not use data from Google at all (Wordtracker) or combine data from multiple sources. Here we have information direct from the source!

2) The information that comes back from Google is of course very up to date, unlike a lot of other keyword research data that can be months out of date.

I am not suggesting that you get rid of all other keyword tools in favor of this technique, but I do recommend you check it out. With all the latest whiz bang all conquering, overly hyped software tools that seemingly gets released everyday, sometimes it pays to take a step back and go back to just using a very simple method like searching in Google!

In my case, I actually use this method in conjunction with other keyword tools, and get the best out of both worlds. My two favorite keyword research tools currently are Nichebot and Market Samurai (google them).

I find the best use of this technique is when searching new niches, or when trying to establish the viability of entering a particular market.

One final thing to note is that unfortunately not all keywords are supported. Sometimes there are no related search terms are provided for a given keyword, but given that it’s free I’m happy to overlook that oversight.

And occasionally I have to mention that the search terms returned seem a little bizarre. But this seems to be in more unusual niches that perhaps Google have not collected enough information for (my speculation).

Get out there and have a look at the related search function in Google. The search terms returned might end up being very useful.

Maybe a picture of the last website you visited with a post on attracting visitors, or perhaps you see a picture of your empty paypal account that you know might only get filled up once you receive a stream of web traffic.

The point of all this is you do not think of a word or phrase as “text” but actually you see an image of your interpretation of that word or phrase in your mind.

In many respects the human mind is like a video player than can play movies on demand.

Is Your Promotion Video Strategy In Place?

Doesn’t it then make sense to create content that will press your visitors buttons? Pictures and better still videos will do just that.

A picture, or a video is generally one of the 1st thing a human eye will gravitate towards when opening a webpage, and even more so if the image is of a human face. Try it for your self. Open a page on the internet containing text and a picture or a video and “watch” where your eyes go.

Entire sites have been setup,hundreds of them in fact dedicated to sharing video and images and they are some of the most heavily trafficked of any websites on the internet. Why? People absolutely like watching videos and looking at pictures.

Isn’t it time you started making a major investment on video for your websites?

Now any video you produce should offer relevant and useful information to your audience, and should be targeted to their needs. If you just “self promote”, then you are likely to be very disappointed with the outcome. Remember people love watching Channel WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) !

A video can be an incredibly powerful testimonial because it can give the visitor the “proof” that the product works, as well as demonstrating potentially useful information relating to the product.

Just take a look at TV advertising if you are ever stuck for ideas on video concepts. With the high cost of advertising on TV, you can bet that the formats of ads are tested and proven winners (guaranteed to “convert” as many of their targeted watchers as possible).

For example, many TV advertisements cover similar themes listed below.

1. Identify the problem in the mind of the viewer.

2. “Offer” a fix to the problem.

3. Introduce other people who “love” the product (testimonials).

4. Introduce special price.

5. Introduce scarcity (available for a limited time, etc).

6. Introduce a few bonus items (2 for the price of 1, order in next 30 mins to get this great bonus, etc).

It should be no surprise looking at the list above to realize that a lot of internet marketing launches follow the EXACT same model. I am hoping that if you now realize this, it may get you to spend a little more time researching the product before “buying the One Time Offer”. Because you know this information you can not get “sucked in” to the buying process.

I would suggest that if you are trying to “sell” in your video that you cover a similar format using the AIDA formula. AIDA stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

So the first part of the video should resonate with your prospect just by seeing it, so a grabby headline or something to get to the problem straight away is a good idea to start.

Once you have their first bit of Attention you have to convert this into genuine Interest. How is your product going to help out your prospect? Will it make their life better? Remember prospects buy on Benefits (what it’s going to do for them) and not Features, so target Benefits here.

Ok, Attention and Benefits are resolved, it’s time to get them to want the product.. Badly! This is Desire, Make the offer irresistible. Perhaps some cool extra bonuses, you really want to make it a “no brainer” for them to get. An iron clad guarantee is also wise at this point.

Finally, the last but by no means least step is Action. You can build up Attention, Interest, and Desire, but your paypal account is not going to move up until you get them to take Action.

Actually ask your prospect to buy, or leave their email, or visit the website, or anything you are trying to get them to do. Be specific and tell them exactly what you want them to do. This step can be a huge stumbling block, so make sure you not forget to add this.

Be sure that your video promotion items focuses on the benefits your prospect will receive. Just create the video from a prospects point of view and address the problems, interests, desires, and of course the solution and you will be almost guaranteed to get a great response from your video.

We’re glad you asked.

It’s really just a method to get your information out to a boatload of prospects by using the power of other people e.g. word of mouth. In other words the idea is to get your message out much like a computer virus would spread.

Infection in this case is usually can be a great thing; in this context it’s internet users becoming aware of your info and your site.

Now the actual message can be in many formats, video, email, podcast,  or whatever.  The purpose is to get internet users who already have your message to send it to people they know, multiplying your message spreading exponentially.

First, let me make it clear that I am not advocating sending Spam out to millions of people.

Apart from the legalities of doing this, spamming is just dumb, because often not even seen due to smart spam filters, and even if it happens to be read it’s clear that going to spread is it? After all if it makes it past the spam folders and actually makes it into someone’s Inbox, it’s just going to get deleted when and if it is read.

Here we go with what seems the topical phrase of many articles relevant useful content is the key.  Giving value to people is the key.

So how do we get visitors to do your work for you?  How do you get them to do that? Spread your viral content that is.

First things first, it simply must be something relevant and useful.

In other words it has to have real value.  The person who has received your information has to fully believe it will give value to someone else otherwise they will not spread it to anyone else.

One thing I have found in this industry is almighty power of JV’s. It’s a lot easier to get your message out there if you have others in the industry with large lists of their own.

Let’s say you have released a new e-Book. You currently have a mailing list of 1000 prospects who have expressed an interest or actually purchased something from you in the past.

Your info product would be of course in a related niche so you feel sure you can generate at least some interest in it from your readers so that is the first place to attack.

You will likely find that some of your customers will send the offer to their friends if they think it’s worthy.

Ahhh the power of word of mouth advertising, Is there any more powerful force in marketing then getting your customers telling their family how cool, hip and fantastic you and your products are?  This is viral email marketing in full swing.

If you can get customers telling their co-workers about your product and then once they invest in it and then tell their friends then surely you can see that it will take very little time at all to have a huge response to your offer.

You’ll be needing to rent more servers for your site because the old one has crashed with massive web traffic you get.

Before you rush out and register that brand new domain I am going to suggest that you consider an aged domain instead.

What is an aged domain??

An aged/expired domain is a domain that has been previously registered by another person, and that person or company has, for whatever reason decided not to renew it.

Sometimes the reason is simply that they forget.

There was a famous story a few years ago when a very valuable domain passport.com owned by Microsoft was not renewed when it came time to renew the registration, meaning it became available for anyone to re-register.

An individual did just that with this domain, but luckily for Microsoft this guy did the right thing and gave the domain back to them (I think Microsoft paid him back the registration fee).

Other reasons for not renewing a domain might be that the company that owned the domain went bankrupt, or they maybe transferred the business that used to operate on that domain to another domain.  In fact there are a heap of reasons why domain names do get forgotten about.

So what are the advantages for you re-registering an aged domain?

1.    Links - Most domains, particularly those domains that have been actively used in the past and not just had no promotion have other sites pointing to them over time, and these backlinks form a vital part in determining how well the domain will rank in the search engines for particular keyword phrases.

2.    Page Rank - As a consequence of these links, many of these expired domains will have existing page rank.

3.    Age - As a general rule the search engines give more authority to domains that have been registered for a a longer period than other domains.

4.    Web site Visitors - Many domains will have existing traffic, with visitors rolling up to that domain on a regular basis, usually as a result of previous promotions done by the previous site owner.

5.    No Sandbox - New domains are once in a while placed in a “sandbox” where they will not get as much traffic as more established domains until they have proven themselves to the search engines.

These are probably the most attractive items to consider when re-registering an existing domain versus registering a brand new domain.

There is an vital distinction I recommend you become familiar with between an expired or aged domain and a deleted domain.

An aged or expired domain name has the existing age kept.

For example if I registered a domain three years ago and then did not renew the registration and you come along and re-register it, then for all intensive purposes the domain is still 3 years old and still has all the advantages of that age in the search engines.

If however, you re-register a deleted domain, then effectively you have registered a BRAND NEW domain.  You will still be be able to use any links, page rank, and traffic, but your domain may be subjected to the sandbox, and WILL be treated as a brand new domain by the search engines.

So the key is to grab the domain before it is deleted by the domain registrar.  There are a number of free websites available that you can use to find aged domains or expired domains.

Just do a search in Google for terms such as aged domain finder or something similar.

These websites will often allow you to search for domains and return information about the age of the domain, existing page rank, number of links, traffic, and even allow you to use the Wayback machine (a catalog of all web pages at various points in time) to see what content was on the domain in the past.

Some of the more complete services will allow you to search with keywords as well which is a very powerful feature.

You see domains rank better in Google, MSN, and Yahoo if they contain a keyword relating to the particular niche you are involved with.

For example if you are selling products for cats, then if you have the word cat or cats in the domain name this will help you get better rankings than domains that do not have this (if everything else is equal).

Essential tips to purchasing aged domains

1. Try and get a domain at least five years old (the older the better, this is a minimum).

2. Aim for a decent number of links as possible (although this is not essential).

3. Existing Page rank is not necessary but a bonus if you can find it.

4. Existing web traffic again is not essential but is a huge bonus.

5. Make sure the domain has at least part of a keyword relating to the niche you are going to use the domain in.

6. Check the history of the domain to make sure you are happy with the previous content that has been used on the domain previously.  Bad content may have blacklisted the domain in the search engines.  Many services allow you to search for this automatically.

7. Optional: Use a service that allows you to search closeouts.  These are really cheap domains usually costing only $5 (plus standard registration fees).  Wht buy premium domains if you do not need them?  You do not need to spend much money to find domains that have most of the items discussed above.  In fact only recently I purchased a 11 year old domain, with 200+ web visitors per day and a heap of links for just $5 !

Buying expired domains can really give you a legup on your competition, and if your smart and use the right websites, and look for the right type of domains, it need not be an expensive exercise.

Isn’t your internet marketing worth spending an extra $5 to get an aged domain so you can take advantage of all these factors?

Perhaps you have even used it to catch up on your daily news from your all time favorite websites.  Great free software like Google Reader makes it a breeze to keep up with the latest happenings on topics of interest to you.

But there is another aspect to RSS I would like to bring to your attention today, and that’s rss feed submission which is the process of using this technology to get better page rankings in the search engines and increase web traffic to your website.

I am going to suggest to you that this is very important process for you to understand and start using as probably the vast majority of your competition (other web sites) are not even are they can benefit from this.  So using feed submission is a great way to assist you in leapfrogging your competition.

Do You RSS Submit?

But lets take a step back and work out how the process works.  Firstly in order to use RSS like this, you need an rss feed.

Think of an rss feed as just a file containing a description of one or more web pages.  It’s a standard format that can be read by literally millions of programs of programs on the internet.

It’s actually said that RSS makes the World Wide Web work and this is not far from the truth.

You see computers being what they are, are not smart enough to understand a particular piece of information unless they understand the structure.  Because RSS is a documented format, it means all these programs that use RSS can then understand how to decipher a rss feed, and how to process the contents in the file.

Many websites have rss technology built in.  If you are running a wordpress blog you automatically have this technology built in to every post you make on the website.

And even if your using a static website without rss feeds, you can invest in an inexpensive rss script to create rss feeds for your website.

As I mentioned previously RSS technology has mainly been used to retrieve information for a group of websites (news, new content, etc).  It up until recently has not been used to assist you in getting visitors to your website or ranking better in google.

But new full functional software is coming out to take advantage of the power of RSS to tell the internet world about your website.

Entire websites are developed and being developed as RSS Aggregators, in other words sites with their primary mission being receiving information about the content that is on other websites.  And guess what?  They use Really Simple Syndication technology as well.

Google, the premier search engine itself invested millions purchasing a major RSS website called feedburner.  Further they then added to their Adsense program a module for RSS Feeds.    Adsense is the most widely used technology to put advertisements on websites that we know of today.

I am hoping your starting to see where I am going with this, if entire sites are setting themselves up to use rss in a major way and Google themselves are heavily investing in RSS technology, then this is something that all marketers should be looking at.

Google realize that RSS is all about tracking content changes, because anytime a website adds content to their website (if they are using rss technology) then their rss feed is automatically updated.

And with rss aggregator websites actively wanting to receive content via rss feeds,  and these sites almost always allowing website owners to “send” their rss feed for free, the time is ripe for you to start using this in your internet marketing.

You see any time you submit rss feed files to these websites, they store the file on their servers and provide a backlink (a link back to your website).  And because google love new content, they visit these sites more often than static sites, and as a result they rank these websites more prominently in the search engines, meaning more web visitors find that content.

The end result is your blog gets found by more people, either indirectly by the link on the rss aggregator website, or directly in the search engines because your website now ranks better because of the links from the these rss websites.

In the past it has been rather time consuming to submit these feeds to these websites.  But software is constantly coming out that will greatly reduce the time necessary to submit.

Early versions of the software would require you to manually create rss feed files and to specify which sites to submit to, and although quicker than a pure manual process would still end up a time consuming process.

More recent versions of the software actually create rss feeds automatically and submit automatically to the rss aggregator websites every time you post.  There are versions of the software that work as a desktop application, or on a server.  There are even versions of the software that work with the most popular blog platform on the internet, Wordpress.

Still more versions of the software allow you to merge feeds (create a new rss feed from two or more existing rss feeds) and to then allow you to submit that for more backlinks and more rankings!

So make sure you take the time to test the best rss submit technology available and take the time to understand rss feeds.  Your web site will thank you in the form of extra web traffic and better rankings in google.

Remember, if Google thinks enough of the technology to be sinking millions into it, it’s not a fad, but it’s here to stay!
