Hi guys,

We’ve had a few people asking about nofollow and other SEO concepts recently, so we have decided to post a video taken from our membership site explaining it and make it available here.

We have close to 50 videos in the membership area with many more being added each week covering aspects of SEO, web 2.0 promotion, and many other topics.

Video options

1. Just click the play button to watch the embedded version. OR

2. Click the “HD” link below the video to play online (but in a better resolution). OR

Click Here To Play the High Definition Version

We hope you enjoy the video.

To your success!

Tim & Anthony

For a simple seo report one could use the addons (chrome or mozilla) from http://domof.com/p/help.html , which on click will point the user to the seo analysis page of the current browsing tab ;-)

    Thanks for the comments…

SEO Quake also offers a tool to determine when a link is a nofollow link (it will just put a line through the text) like on this site. All wordpress installations are nofollow automatically. You will have to use a plug-in to make your comment links “dofollow”

Forgot to mention, there’s also a firefox addon that highlights nofollow links automatically on the page, no need to look at the source at all.

Just thought I’d remind you that if you’re using firefox, select a part of a page, right click “view selection source” is a quicker way of finding what you’re looking for.

I fully agree that both kinds of links are important, though be it for different reasons. It’s like being right handed but having a left hand is still pretty useful. One question though. I understand that WordPress automatically adds no-follow links to all external links. Is this true or not? I would appreciate your feedback on this.

    Thanks, great video.
But I was hoping when I saw your email that you were going to talk about how to put nofollow on links in your own blogs too :-(
I don’t understand why when I have a problem how no-one else seems to ever have that same problem, and I can’t get answers, tee hee hee…
Anyway, I have blogs with 1000′s of posts and cannot find anywhere how to nofollow all of the the outgoing links that are already in there. I am at the moment working thru one page at a time, putting it in manually…. but at this rate it will take ’til the end of my life.
Is there an automatic method of making outgoing links nofollow and to default new posts also to nofollow”.
Thanks again for vids… they are great!

I agree that both types are important. I think a backlink is a backlink, don’t really care if it’s dofollow or no follow.

I didn’t have any audio in the last couple of minutes.

    Thank you Tim,

This is very interesting. I was very surprised by your explanation about the no-follow links on blog comments especially in view that most of the “experts” continue to suggest that commenting on relevant blogs is essential for link building for new websites. But you are absolutely right. After watching the video I’ve checked comment links on a few random WP sites and they were no-follow.

I enjoy watching your videos. They are all so well done and are very informative. Thank you.

All the best and more success to you in 2011.

I have a question for Tim regarding RSS, does the backlinks created by RSS : are the same quality as other backlinks ?
(assuming that they are both created from the same site)
are all backlink are created equal ??? (from ths same site)

Awesome, I’ve always wondered what who created the nofollow tag in the first place.

Google is everywhere and make their mark . . .

Great video, that cleared up a bit, thanks!

I find that links with the rel=”no follow” tag counting as back links in Google Webmaster Tools. Do you?

    Hi Mike,

The reason any page ranks better than another is authority. Google decides that page is more authoritiative. Maybe you had mote backlinks to it? Or an internal link, and/or the page was better optimized for that keyword.

Usually this will be at least a major part of it.

    Regards

    Tim

Yeah I lost the last minute or so too. Anyway this has clarified something that has been bugging me for ages. One site I used to have actually ranked the contact page at 3 and the homepage at 6 in Google. How the hell does this happen? The contact page had no other keyword than the site name twice, once being in the email address,as oppossed to the homepage being really keyword rich and it flowed really nicely. Googles algorithm sux.
But great post and most appreciated.

I agree with much of the above. The content is very clear and extremely useful. However you loose me from 13 minutes onwards regarding the dilution of links and why/how to make Privacy, Terms, Disclaimer etc “nofollow”. This is really key and would be great to give some examples as before.

I think it’s a good clarification on a basic but important topic.

    Thanks.

No audio the last part of your video. Hope there was nothing there to important.

You lose the audio in the last minute and a half… I wish I knew what your summation was… :(

This is something I am still trying to fully understand but this video does give me a bit. I think I will have to check it out again to let it all sink in but I thank you for bringing out this video.
