Looking for the best web traffic strategies?

As there are a number of methods to generate a good amount of traffic, you’d probably feel a bit confused about them. Let’s tackle one method at a time.

-Today let’s discuss Web 2.0 – The Power of Social Media

Web 2.0 is really just a way of describing the use of interactive websites.

When the Internet first got started there were no graphics, it was all text based.

Slowly the technology got developed to display graphics with the text and traditional web sites got developed.

These websites are still in existence today, in fact many of us still use them, effectively they allow very little interaction with visitors.

What they do is allow you to show a particular graphic and some text and perhaps a button for the visitor to click on to buy something or a place to fill out their email address, or credit card information.

But very little real interaction. What web 2.0 really does is add the ability of the visitor to interact more with the website but importantly also to interact with OTHER visitors as well.

Using sites like Twitter is possible to send out a message to your followers (people who have signed up to receive your messages) and thousands of people receive it, who can respond, bringing other people into the conversation.

Web sites like Youtube not only allow you to upload videos to be viewed by others, but gives people the ability to comment on your video and “rate them”.
“Social proof” (finding out how others feel about a particular product or service you are interested in) is something virtually all of us use in some way shape of form, and web 2.0 really allows you to explode this further.

But there is also another huge bonus with web 2.0.

And that is that the search engines (in particular) Google absolutely love the content on these sites, and often rank information on these sites higher in the search engines results than a traditional website.

At first this might seem confusing as to why you would do that, but if you take a step back and think about it, it makes sense.

The search engines after all, want to service the very best content for it’s users, the people who are using the search engines to find things.

That’s because the search engines derive significant percentages of their income from ad’s their users click on, etc.

And because of this, it makes sense for them to provide exactly what their visitors want.  i.e. Relevant content.

In other words their mission in life is to provide the most relevant content to their visitors.

For example if you do a search for Microsoft windows XP then you want information that is most relevant to the visitor showing up first.

Sounds like a no brainer, right?  If they give the visitor the best possible information, then the visitor is going to be happy and continue to use the search engine for future searches, and click other ad’s, etc.

So what has all this got to do with web 2.0 ?

It’s all about “being” where the people are.  If there are millions of videos being watched every day on youtube and probably hundreds of thousands of comments, thats a lot of people, right?

So google will see a web site like that as relevant but not only that but as an Authority site, which is another way of saying a website that has a high level of trust with Google.

Because Google can see all the new comments and videos (in the case of a video site) or tweets (Twitter) or updates in Facebook, etc it stands to reason they are going to make sure it is placed more prominently in the search engine results.

This is why, for example it’s very common for a video to show up in the search engine results that is directly related to your search phrase.

In short the search engines are pretty smart because they “trust” sites frequented by lots of other people and want to send you to these types of sites because you are going to be happy with the “social proof” you find, namely the other people just like you who have visited the site.

So the visitor is happy because the web 2.0 site they arrive on is relevant and likely information from other human visitors, and the search engines are happy because they get to continue to provide more relevant content.

Ok, so I’ve established web 2.0 is a good idea, but how can internet marketers benefit from using these types of websites?

Quite simply really, but getting our content (information about our products and services, etc) onto these web 2.0 sites.

What often happens is that this content (unsurprisingly) gets an “unfair” advantage compared to more traditional websites and ranks more prominently in the search engines for the reasons listed above.

There is a ton more to learn about web 2.0, which is really outside the scope of this newsletter.

What you decide, make sure you use Web 2.0 in your online marketing promotions.

The good news is that setting up a Blog for your website is surprisingly easy but there are a few caveats and things you need to change to ensure your blog is setup correctly to get maximum exposure in the search engines.

Let’s take a step back and define what a Blog actually is shall we?

A blog can be thought of as a simple, public online diary where you can write entries (posts) into the diary.

Being public, the posts can be viewed by anyone who happens to surf by your site, and hopefully you have lots and lots of people reading every post you make, and contributing to your Blog in the form of adding comments, looking at relevant links you add to your blog, watching audio and video, and hopefully linking to your blog from their website, if they happen to have one.

What is particularly attractive about Blogs?

===> The entire process of Blogging is very simple to do, mainly due to the great quality of Blog software available that you can install on your website.

Decent Blogging software provides all the functionality you need, the management of posts by yourself (and others), the categorization of posts (something that is essential) and even the process of telling other blogging websites every time you make a new post automatically.

Automatically telling other sites about your posts is a huge plus since it’s getting known on the Internet, without the need for you to be having to manually “submit” your blog in order for people to find out about it.

That’s got to be good right?

One of the most important things to ensure is that you don’t just use the Blog as a sales page (I recommend you leave the selling of your products and services to your actual sales page on your website).

Obviously you will want to talk about your products and services, and the benefits visitors will get in using them, but I believe it’s important not to have an all out sales pitch, as that will tend to turn off visitors who may be seeing your message for the first time.

We also recommend you talk about non-business stuff, information about you, the person, some of your interests, things you have found of interest on the Internet, etc.

When people read these personal posts, they get to know the real you, and form a relationship with a “real person” and not a nameless website, and this can only assist you in future sales with these people.

A Blog also allows (and in fact encourages) participation by visitors, who can post responses to your entries, and this is often a great way to stimulate interesting conversations.

Good Blogging software will allow you to remove spam responses (where visitors or programs “write” messages directing people to their site) as well as to moderate conversations that are in appropriate or off-topic.

One of the best reasons to use Blogs is to help you rank highly in the search engines. The search engines love Blogs, provided they are providing relevant and quality content.

To give you an idea of how important search engines see Blogs, Google bought one of the largest Blogging sites out there (blogger.com). Having a focused relevant site with interesting and useful content can only help you in your journey to find true search engine love.

If you have read any of the other articles on this blog, you’ve probably gathered that Anthony & I preach relevant useful content. Blogs are no different than other web traffic techniques, you need to ensure it’s relevant, and ensure your separate your posts into logical categories.

For example if you have a website about software development, you may make posts discussing programming generally, other posts about training for software developers, and more posts about a specific computer language like Java.

It’s vitally important that you don’t just lump all posts together for a number of reasons. Firstly, people coming to your Blog may have a specific interest in some of your posts (training for example) and may find it hard and frustrating to easily find all posts you have written on training if you have not clearly defined categories (and allowed posts to be searched/sorted by these categories).

Likewise the search engines may view your Blog as less relevant if you lump all your posts together than another Blog elsewhere that has posts clearly defined in categories. Search engines very much prefer categorization of information and reward websites that categorize correctly with high search engine rankings.

The most popular open source blogging package is WordPress.

WordPress is a free blogging package (yes nothing to pay!), and is extremely flexible and easy to use without sacrificing anything in power and flexibility. We use this package and recommend you do as well.

Because of its popularity many Web host’s have it available for installation on their websites for you with “one-click” installs.

So what should you write about in your Blog?

We’ve got no idea!

(joking)… please read on..

Good question, here are a few ideas: -

1. Your products (duh, obvious one here). Don’t do the hard sell here, remember here you are trying to generate a bit of interest about the product, perhaps from visitors to your Blog who know nothing about your products, think of it more as a pre-sale to entice them to click on the link when the sales page hopefully weaves it’s magic.

1. Free valuable content – Found a decent product from a competitors website?, Found a free tool that made life easier for you, etc? Write a review and link to your competitors website. Focus on making your Blog interesting to read and of value to the reader. If you can think what the Blog looks like from the visitors perspective you are halfway there to making it work well.

1. Personal posts – Not related at all to your products, may be related to your life, on holidays somewhere? Cute little “human interest” stories. I’m talking about the type of stuff that visitors can relate to, and can bring out the real you. For example, on one of our Blogs , we discuss our personal experiences about diet and exercise. This has nothing at all to do with our products but we’re sure a lot of visitors will be able to relate to the battle to beat the bulge. Normally this “intermixing” of content would be a definite “no-no” because it would have the effect of diluting the importance of your website, but this isn’t your main website, and it’s not on your sales pages, it’s on your Blog. We got lots of emails from other blogs from visitors where they took the time to write me about some of these personal stories and many ended up buying products from us at a later date.
2. What about Video and Audio? Absolutely! Although it’s a growing area, the vast majority of Blogs out there don’t use audio and video and in our opinion this is a mistake because they are missing out on a lot of traffic!

I hope you have now realized the power of using and maintaining a Blog, it can be the ultimate web site promotion with the result being increased web site traffic.

So  what are  3 of the BIGGEST web video mistakes people are making??

Firstly, let me start out by saying if you are NOT using web video yet, you MUST start today!!

Web videos are an incredible way to build links to your website and to bring targeted web traffic.

Also, web video is a fantastic tool to increase your sales conversions (you’ll sell more using web video!).

If you are not using web video you are leaving a pile of cash on the table.

The  3 BIGGEST MISTAKES to avoid in regard to creating & using web video!

* MISTAKE NO 1 *

“Thinking you cannot create video because it’s too technical or it will cost a lot of money”.

WRONG….

Web video is easy to do and  cheap especially with the right resources.

See some of the resources we use. (we have a number of web videos HERE that show you what to use).

* MISTAKE NO 2 *

“Failure to upload your videos to enough of the correct video sites”.

THIS IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST  MISTAKE WE SEE!

Youtube ONLY is NOT ENOUGH.

Youtube is obviously a very impressive site, but to really take your rankings into OVERDRIVE  you need to upload your video to a  LARGE NUMBER  of websites, 50 to  100 or more !

Now you don’t want to be doing that MANUALLY, do you?

I don’t know about you, but spending  that amount of time would DRIVE ME NUTS!

I mean when would I get time to play guitar if we had to do everything manually?

I’d much rather find a way of achieving the same result in a FRACTION OF THE TIME  and preferably on AUTOPILOT.

Thankfully there is a cool piece of software that my brother Tim found and TESTED that AUTOMATES this video uploading process.

It  makes it an incredibly  MUCH EASIER  process to get your video uploaded to many sites at once, quickly and without fuss on AUTOPILOT.

It submits to 100 sites automatically  in fact!

* MISTAKE NO 3 *

“Thinking that your web  videos cannot be used in your particular niche”.

This is WRONG WRONG WRONG (did I say this thinking is wrong?).  

Google OWNS YouTube and wants videos on EVERY page of the search engine results.

If you happen to have a keyword with no video results on page one?  Guess what?  That’s an easy way for you to get to page one!

IN SUMMARY

Avoiding these three common web mistakes will put you AHEAD of about 90% of your competition!

Have you considered replacing yourself and letting someone else do most of your “mundane” work?

A few days ago we mentioned an outsourcing solution we are using called ReplaceYourself.

A heap of people emailed in asking questions about it so we wanted to give you a few tips that have helped make outsourcing work well for us.

For those that didn’t get the email with the video we put together about outsourcing, we suggest you WATCH THE VIDEO HERE now.

TRAINING STAFF

We found it (and still find it) generally best to train up our staff somewhat rather than looking for someone fully trained.

Replace Yourself  has great training resources for your outsourcers.

For example – one of our writers had no experience writing online articles.

With the writing training provided in “Replace Yourself” she is now one of our best (and most loyal) writers.

Why consider at least part training your outsourcers yourself?

For 2 main reasons;

1. Loyalty – by assisting someone to learn a certain role in your business, they are much more likely to remain a loyal staff member.

2. Cost effectiveness  – someone “new” working for you that has NOT  been exposed to the likes of Rentacoder and  Elance etc etc is starting “with a clean slate”.

Many (certainly not all though)  of the staff available on these and many other outsourcing websites have been subject to some buyers who have no idea of prices and and who  end up paying 5 or 10 times the going rate.

This results in many workers overcharging and trying to manage too many projects at a time. By training up a worker, outside of these websites, this issue can be prevented.

WEEDING OUT THE DUDS WITH A SIMPLE TRIAL!

The “trial” is a must, and we normally do a “pre-work” minor trial to get rid of the “tire kickers” (those people who say they have experience in a certain thing but don’t).

For example we might require a person to install blogs, post comments, etc (and their resume might say they know how to install plugins on a blog).

We would give them basic instructions to “login to this blog and download this plugin and install it”.

If they couldn’t do it (but indicated it on their resume) we’d take that as a sign NOT to use them.

We virtually 100% of the time interview people over Skype (text chat only) and by asking some “hard” questions we weed out people even further.

A TRIAL EXAMPLE

For example if the outsourcer  says they are an “expert on link building” we would ask for an example site they have previously worked on, ask for keyword(s) they were targeting and paste it into rank tracker in Market Samurai and check the results. If the keywords were on page one (or where they said they were) then good, if not we’d query it.

For writers you can ask for a test article and then check it for unique content, use of correct keywords etc.

By doing this, it really helps you qualify people.

It take a little longer to interview but worth it, because you end up with better people and save time in the long run..

We currently  have ten (10) full time Philippine workers, so yes it can work!

We have certainly had some issues getting things sorted and  cannot say it’s perfect but after the initial period of time getting them trained in exactly what we want done, we can say we are getting good results from them each day.

If you are expecting them to magically understand your business from day 1, then you will will be in for a shock, you do have to put a little work in.

But it’s such a liberating feeling saying “setup a link campaign for xyz now please, here are the keywords, and here are the articles” and off they go and the work get’s done.

We suggest you get yourself a good  project manager as soon as possible to manage your workers.

But if you are just starting out,  you certainly can  get great results by interviewing and running a trial and managing the workers yourself…
