Which Website Are Your Targeting? MySpace Or FaceBook

Hi all,

Please bear with us because your probably wondering what Myspace or Facebook has got to do with TakeOverPageOne.com, right?

Well quite a bit really, for starters they both do extremely well in the web traffic stakes, being among the top ten of most heavily trafficked websites on the Internet.

First things first, off the top of your head, which website would you think is doing better financially (read: making more money).

Myspace or Facebook ?

I’m not asking traffic numbers, I can tell you Facebook gets more traffic that MySpace. Facebook last time I checked is number 5 on the Alexa ranking, where MySpace is lagging far behind at position 7 (ok not far behind!). Facebook does get a lot more traffic.

I’m talking revenue primarily from online ad’s (both websites allow marketers to pay for ads).

You may be surprised to know that MySpace is a long way ahead of Facebook in revenues.

According to sources (don’t you just love that “sources”) Myspace is on track to turn over $1Billion in sales/year soon (it did $850M last year).

Compare this to Facebook, which is “cooler” in many people’s eyes but is way behind at only $300 million or so.

This is huge money when the primary income is from advertising on web pages, isn’t it?

And another very interesting fact for me. If you believe the numbers, forty (40) percent of mothers online in the U.S. alone use MySpace. Wow!

Jeff Berman, president, sales and marketing at MySpace.com says Myspace is going reach $1 billion in sales quicker than Yahoo or Google did!

That got our attention.

Now I’m not going to suggest you run off and join the PPC offerings of both of these social media sites (although lots of people are no doubt making gobs of money doing so).

I’m going to suggest that you have a re-think of your promotional work at both websites. Just what exactly are you doing (if anything) on these websites.

Are you actively promoting to your niches in these websites? Are you uploading video’s to these sites? Are you investigating revenue opportunities, building friends, setting up groups, blogging, etc on these websites?

If not, it’s time you did. I’ll be honest and say I have all but abandoned Myspace in the past 6-7 months, but after recently reading this, I am going to refocus my efforts on there again.

It’s time to do some testing on MySpace again. A website making that much money from people visiting has to be worthy to look into.

Unfortunately both Facebook and MySpace use nofollow tags for external links, meaning the power is in the network you build up (network of people), not the network of links.

But remember you can still build up traffic to your external websites, by building up relationships with others on the site, and then directing them to your external websites.

Take the time to setup an account at both websites if you haven’t done so already, and start building relationships. There is definitely money in there, waiting to be found!

Internet Marketers have long said the power is in the list. I’d go further and say the power is in the relationships. The social relationships you can build with people in your niche using community websites like these.

Well that’s my post for today, a bit boring and maybe not geeky enough?

To rectify that, I’ll do some geek “speak” now (as if I need an excuse to talk geeky).

Well, time to go get back into finishing off our new little RSS submitter we call RSS Power Plus. This wordpress plugin will automatically post to 5-6 RSS aggregators for you automatically, every time you publish a post in wordpress.

What do you need to do? Nothing more, it’s automatic! How cool is that (gee sometimes I impress myself).

I just fixed a heap of bugs, and am going to give this to Anthony now to test out and see what he can break.

Mind you I can’t seem to raise him on Skype (probably out playing his guitar again). :)

Did I tell you we live in different states? (Yes I know, relevance factor to this post: zero, sorry).

Anyway, as soon as he gives it the seal of approval (in other words I don’t need to explain anything to him to get it to work!) then I will shoot an instruction video and you will be good to go.

He’s our Guinea pig; if Anthony can install it and use it blindfolded (while playing “Back in Black” on his guitar) , then we release it!  Well  maybe not playing Black in Black.

I thought it was ready yesterday but he managed to crash it twice for me (my fault with the coding).

He is good tester like that, always finds errors I have never seen before! It’s works out to your advantage because it means all the bugs will be ironed out before it’s released.

The last thing Anthony asked for (“asked for” is his wording, more like “demanded” in my words) was a import/export function, so you can easily just copy the settings into another blog, so you don’t have to type in the settings.

Good for those people who have multiple blogs, and don’t like to type any more than they have to.

Ok, I am rambling again, so time to go.

Remember that only those people who are subscribed will get it for free, so if you have not done that, please do it now!

Until next time,

Cheers

Tim

Great post. I think to answer the question of which is better, then it would greatly depend on who your target market is. I use both site, but I have found Facebook to be more “grown up” I guess I would say. Like I said it all depends who you target market is. You wouldn’t advertise at the opera if your market was sports fans.

Very interesting article. I use both to promote my PoemVidz site plus many others. I guess it all depends on your target market and who do you want to attract. Having said that, I update all of them equally ;)
